Observation Narrative
The southeastern elbow of Coards Branch Pond supports a floating Sphagnum-sedge mat that grades shoreward into an ericaceous shrub thicket. Species occurring on the mat include Eleocharis equisetoides, Eriocaulon septangulare, Cladium mariscoides, Drosera intermedia, Lycopodiella inundata, Utricularia gibba, Xyris caroliniana, Rhynchospora alba, Rhynchospora cf. chalarocephala, and Sphagnum spp. Species associated with the primarily ericaceous shrub border include Vaccinium corymbosum, Leucothoe racemosa, Aronia arbutifolia, Clethra alnifolia, Ilex glabra, Alnus serrulata, Acer rubrum, and Pinus taeda. Plot incorporates a portion of the shrub community, but prevailing physiognomy in fen proper is herbaceous with sparse shrub cover. Nymphaea odorata is abundant in the deeper, open water of the pond, and Pontederia cordata is infrequent.
Acer rubrum and Pinus taeda stems measured at 5.4 and 6.7 cm, respectively.
There has been considerable modification of the pond shore on the northeastern side where it abuts residential lots. The boggy margin on the southeastern side has also been much trampled.
